The son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, one-time residents of Richmond Mine, Harry moved from the Negaunee area to Wharton, NJ, a number of years before becoming a war casualty. He attended high school for one year, and was a resident of Morris County, New Jersey, when he entered the Army on October 24, 1942 at Newark. |

He was home on one six-hour leave after his induction, and received his infantry training at Camp Wheeler, GA, going overseas in February 1943. He took part in the African campaign, and the invasion of Sicily where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was transferred to England from Sicily in December 1943. |

Besides his parents, he left two brothers, Newell J. Smith, employed at Picanny Arsenal; and Ralph or James Smith in the Naval V-12 training unit at Worcester, Massachusetts. |

These days Harry M Smith rests in the beautiful American Military Cemetery on top of the cliffs overlooking Omaha Beach, Normandy in Colleville- sur-Mere. He is remembered and honored by his his entire family, by every visitor of the American Cemetery Normandy and by every visitor of the In Honored Glory website. |
