Robert Weisenberg's Story ...

Bob as he was called, was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois. He grew up in a family with three brothers, Gene, Jack and Joe. Bob attended All Soul's Grammar School, Alhambra High School and Pasadena Junior College in California. Before Bob entered the service he worked for an automobile dealer.

Alhambra High School

Bob entered the service in Alhambra, California. He was sent to the 18th infantry regiment from a Replacement Depot. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, Company K. Bob joined Company K on November 15, 1944, where he was assigned as the first Platoon Leader. He was Platoon Leader from the November 15 till November 20 when he was Killed in Action near the village of Heistern in the Hürtgen Forest.

The five days that Bob spent in the Company K were in the thick of fighting with many, many deaths and many wounded. Bob did not die in vain. His brother Gene Weisenberg was able to contact a man who was in Bob's platoon before Bobn was killed. This man is Private First Class Julian Richitt. He told Gene, that Bob always went out to shake hands with replacements. When he was shaking hands with Julian Richitt some shells were going over head. Julian said, "Bob held onto my hand and pulled us both into a nearby fox hole ... That was the kind of person Bob was."

PFC Julian Richitt is the only person who Gene was able to find who was serving in Company K, together with Bob. If you have any information on other men who have served during this period in Company K, please contact us via this website.

Gene Weisenberg spent about two years gathering information on his brother, mostly from men who also served in the Battalion at the same time frame. With information from many letters, Gene was put in contact with Albert Trostdorf and Ron van Rijt. With the information Gene had gathered and with Albert's and Ron's knowledge of the forest, they were able to pinpoint the exact spot where Bob was killed ... It was on the steps of a farm house.

Gene and his wife, along with his two brothers have visited Bob's final resting place several times. During one of those visits Gene met Mathilde and Marcel Schmetz from the Remember Museum in Thimister- Clermont. Gene recommends that everyone in the area take time to see this wonderful museum. The webmaster of the In-Honored-Glory website can only agree with Gene ... please visit the link "Museum" in the menu to find more information on this place which can be best compared to a time-machine ... back to 1944-1945.

He is remembered and honored by his brothers Gene, Joe and Jack, by his entire family, by Mathilde & Marcel Schmetz who adopted Bob's final resting place, by Julian Richitt, by Albert Trostorf, by Ron van Rijt and everyone who visits the Henri-Chapelle cemetery and everyone who visits this website.
